How much does treatment in Germany cost

Prices for treatment, regardless of the type of medical facility, are regulated by the state and are calculated from the base rates approved by the German Federal Ministry of Health in the DRG catalogue and in the «Scale of Fees for Doctors» GOÄ (Gebührenordnung für Ärzte); that is, a single pricing system applies across all types of hospital — university, municipal and private. This schedule sets the fees for every medical service that is not covered by the country’s statutory health insurance system. It is used for clients who pay for their care under private health insurance and for international patients.
DRG (Diagnosis Related Groups) — a pricing model adopted from the USA and now used in Germany to calculate the standard cost of inpatient care. In other words, DRG are clinical and statistical groups of patients with a similar diagnosis and age who require similar examinations and interventions, grouped together on the assumption that the cost of treating them is almost the same. The calculation takes into account the diagnostic group a patient belongs to, based on their diagnosis, age, the severity of the underlying disease and a number of other criteria. The level of each tariff is determined by the average resources used for a standard clinical case / diagnosis according to ICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems), the classification more commonly known simply as the ICD, now in its 10th revision. The base rates set by the catalogue are increased through multipliers that reflect the severity of the disease, its course, the need for intensive care, complications, the patient’s age and other factors that complicate the case.
