AugenCentrum Aachen Eye Centre, Aachen

AugenCentrum Aachen, the eye centre in Aachen, is an excellently equipped private clinic certified to the DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 quality standard. The centre has an operating theatre for outpatient surgery and a day clinic. It is fitted with Zeiss and Leica microscopes and has equipment for phacoemulsification (cataract), vitreoretinal surgery, endolaser coagulation and cyclophotocoagulation, as well as an excimer laser.

In special (comparatively rare) cases, cataract surgery is performed through a long incision at the outer border of the retina or the adjoining sclera, after which the lens is removed either together with the capsular bag (intracapsular) or without it (extracapsular).

The centre also treats secondary cataract, where the surgical removal of the primary cataract gives rise to a complication — clouding of the posterior lens capsule and declining vision. Modern lenses and surgical techniques have significantly reduced such complications. Surgery for secondary cataract is performed by the painless method of YAG laser capsulotomy using a solid-state «YAG» laser.
