Professor Jörg Kalff

Professor Jörg C. Kalff, MD, has headed the Department of General, Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at University Hospital Bonn since 2010. He holds several medical qualifications: in addition to general surgery, Professor Kalff is a certified thoracic and visceral (abdominal) surgeon as well as a proctologist and transplant surgeon.

The department headed by Professor Kalff specialises in:

  • general and visceral surgery;
  • transplant surgery;
  • thoracic surgery;
  • vascular surgery;
  • paediatric surgery;
  • plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Around 3,000 inpatient surgical operations are performed here every year and more than 15,000 patients are treated on an outpatient basis. The Department of General, Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery offers the full range of diagnostic and treatment services within these fields of expertise. The department is known far beyond Germany as a certified centre for the surgical treatment of malignant diseases of the oesophagus, stomach, bowel, liver, pancreas, lungs, thyroid gland and adrenal glands, as well as tumour metastases in tissues and organs. This range of services is complemented by transplant surgery — liver and pancreas transplantation, in which interdisciplinary cooperation plays a key role.

In the treatment of cancer, the tactics and strategy of therapy are developed individually for each patient by interdisciplinary teams of doctors — surgical oncologists, gastroenterologists, diabetologists, radiologists, cardiologists, pathologists and chemotherapists. Where required, surgical treatment is supplemented by chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. To reduce the invasiveness of surgical treatment and speed up patient recovery, preference is given to minimally invasive procedures and robot-assisted surgery.
