Professor Jens Baron: an expert in laser dermatology

For his work "The influence of the direct biological effects of fractional ultrapulse CO2 laser irradiation on keratinocytes and fibroblasts in organotypic 3D models of human skin", Professor J. M. Baron, Deputy Director of the Department of Dermatology and Allergology at University Hospital Aachen, has this year been awarded the prize of the German Society for Dermatosurgery (DGDC) for his research in the field of laser and light therapy.

This work is the result of interdisciplinary collaboration between the laser centre of University Hospital Aachen and the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, headed by Prof. Dr. med. Frank Hölzle and senior consultant Priv.-Doz. Timm Steiner.

Professor Jens Malte Baron - a top doctor according to the magazine FOCUS

Professor Jens Malte Baron, head of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Laser Medicine at University Hospital Aachen, is one of the leading specialists in dermatological laser medicine according to FOCUS-GESUNDHEIT magazine. The magazine recognised his achievements in this field in its special issue "Healthy Skin and Teeth".

Since October 2013, Professor Baron has headed the Interdisciplinary Centre for Laser Medicine, which specialises in particular in treating patients with skin pigmentation disorders (including actinic keratosis), ultraviolet-induced skin damage (photoageing), skin scars (including surgical scars, acne scars, burn scars and stretch marks) and benign vascular changes (including rosacea, port-wine stain, angiomas, spider veins and vascular malformations). In addition, Professor Baron's research group studies, among other things, the molecular-biological effects of laser and aesthetic treatments using its own three-dimensional skin models.

Laser types: high-energy flashlamps (Maks G, Maks R and Maks Rs, IPL, Cynosure); Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm, ICON platform system, Fa. Cynosure); Er:Glass laser (1540 nm, ICON platform system, Cynosure); CO2 laser (Ultrapulse® Encore, continuous-wave and ultrapulse, Lumenis); CO2 laser (Deep FX® Encore, CPG scanner, Lumenis); CO2 laser (Active FX® Encore, microscanner, Lumenis); Erbium laser (Active FX® Encore, microscanner, Lumenis); YAG laser (Dermablate MCL 31, 2940 nm, Asclepion); dye laser (VBeam Perfecta, 595 nm, Candela); Ellipse IPL (HR600, VL555, PR 530 IPL, Frax 1550).

The Centre for Laser Medicine is recommended by the magazine GALA BEAUTIFY

The Centre for Laser Medicine at University Hospital Aachen, headed by Prof. Dr. med. Jens Malte Baron and Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Timm Steiner, has been named in the GALA BEAUTIFY list of recommendations in the category "Minimally invasive methods".

All the clinics and centres recommended by GALA Beautify magazine in the field of aesthetic medicine are selected in a two-stage process: surveys of more than 1,200 doctors from seven medical specialties, and a review of information and evidence on medical qualifications, practical experience, range of services, areas of specialisation and quality management.

These results were verified, confirmed and supplemented by patient recommendations with the involvement of the foundation Gesundheit ("Health").

Professor Dr. Jens Malte Baron, senior consultant at the Department of Dermatology and Allergology of University Hospital Aachen, received this year's innovation award of the German Dermatological Laser Society (DDL) for his work with a three-dimensional skin model.

In the test system developed by Professor Baron, a fractional CO2 laser creates standardised wounds in a three-dimensional skin model. The system can be used to study the effect of ointments and creams on wound healing without the need for animal experiments or costly clinical trials. In addition, this system should make it possible in future to understand more precisely the biological effects of various laser and light systems on human skin and thus to plan their use in therapeutic practice more effectively.
