Professor Dr. med. Jörg B. Schulz | Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Jörg B. Schulz has been Head of the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Aachen of RWTH Aachen University since 2009. Before taking up this post, Prof. J. B. Schulz worked from 2004 to 2009 as Professor of Neurology and Neurobiology of Ageing at the Georg August University in Göttingen. Prof. Schulz's clinical fields of specialisation are neurodegenerative disorders — dementias, movement disorders, hereditary ataxias — and the treatment of stroke and post-stroke rehabilitation.
Prof. J. B. Schulz's research interests include: the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's chorea, ataxias), the mechanisms of neuronal cell death, gene therapy and experimental pharmacology, the molecular mechanisms of motor learning, clinical research into Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and movement disorders, and imaging methods for studying neurons. Prof. J. B. Schulz is a board member of the Centre for Rare Diseases Aachen (ZSEA) and of the Clinical Trials Centre Aachen (CTC-A), and a member of the German Neurological Society (DGN), the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology (DGPPN), the European Friedreich's Ataxia Consortium for Translational Studies (EFACTS), the German Stroke Society (DSG), the German Society for Neurointensive and Emergency Medicine (DGNI), the German Society for Epileptology (DGfE), the German Migraine and Headache Society (DMKG), the German Society for Neurorehabilitation (DGNR), the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology (DGKN), the Professional Association of German Neurologists (BDN) and the Professional Federation of German Neurologists (BVDN).
Prof. J. B. Schulz is the recipient of the Young Investigator Lectureship grant of the International Society for Neurochemistry as well as of further scholarships and grants for training and research work, a laureate of the Heinrich Pette Prize of the German Neurological Society and a laureate of the Ernst Christian Friedrich Schering Prize of the German Parkinson's Disease Society.
Professor Schulz is a corresponding member of the American Neurological Association, Managing Editor of the Journal of Neurochemistry and the author or co-author of more than 275 publications and papers in Science, NEJM, Lancet, Lancet Neurology, PNAS and the Journal of Neuroscience.
In the annual ranking compiled by the respected magazine Focus, Prof. J. B. Schulz has for several years running been named among Germany's leading specialists in the treatment of stroke, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.
