The department places particular emphasis on intraoperative radiotherapy using miniature linear accelerators, as well as on fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy and radiosurgery (gamma knife treatment) of brain tumours. Another priority area of treatment is radiotherapy for prostate cancer using implanted radioactive micro-sources («seeds»). Successful radiotherapy of prostate cancer requires a high radiation dose. When radioactive seeds are placed into the tumour area, the radiation dose can be focused and increased to the maximum. The department has been performing this type of therapy since 1999, so its doctors have extensive clinical experience in this field. The radionuclide used is iodine-125 (half-life 60 days). The implantation is carried out under imaging guidance.

Radiotherapy is therefore delivered in a differentiated and maximally effective way, with strict observance of radiation protection rules.
