Nikolaus Marx

Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Nikolaus Marx has headed the Department of Cardiology, Pneumology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital Aachen, part of RWTH Aachen University, since 2009.

Under his leadership the department has grown into one of the largest cardiology centres in Europe. Its equipment reflects the state of the art in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease (for example, catheterisation laboratories using stereotaxis, Dyna-CT, equipment for real-time 3D imaging and so on)

Professor N. Marx is a recognised researcher and an experienced clinical surgeon. He has received numerous national and international research fellowships and awards, among them the Adolf Merckle Prize (Merckle-Preis) for his contribution to science and the Paul Morawitz Prize of the German Cardiac Society (Paul-Morawitz-Preis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Kardiologie).

Professor Marx is a member of the German Society of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Research (DGK), whose board he chaired from 2005 to 2009; chair of the «Heart and Metabolic Syndrome» working group (2006–2009) and its deputy chair since April 2009; a member of the presidium of the interdisciplinary working council «Heart–Hormones–Diabetes»; since July 2007 a member of the diabetes committee of the American Heart Association (AHA); since March 2009 a member of the scientific council of the German Society for Atherosclerosis Research and, in 2012-2015, its president-elect; and a member of the German Diabetes Society.

Besides his membership of various professional societies, Professor N. Marx acts as an expert for a number of research organisations, such as the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG),

the German Heart Foundation (Deutsche Herzstiftung), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research & Development, the National Centre for Scientific Research, France (Centre national de la Recherche Scientifique), the Foundation for Medical Research, France (Fondation Recherche Medicale), Fondazione Roma, Italy, the Italian Society for the Study of Diabetes, the Flemish Funds for Scientific Research, Belgium, Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).

Professor N. Marx is the author of research papers in the journals: Circulation, Circulation Research, American Journal of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Research, Drugs, Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, Journal of Diabetes and its Complications, Diabetologia, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Journal of Vascular Research, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Atherosclerosis, British Journal of Pharmacology, Hypertension, The Lancet, European Heart Journal, Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets, FASEB Journal, FEBS Letters, Hormone and Metabolic Research, Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences (CMLS), Journal of Immunology.

From 2003 to 2005 Professor N. Marx was deputy editor-in-chief and, since 2006, senior editor of the journal Diabetes and Vascular Disease Research; since 2006 he has been an executive editor of Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy; and since 2005 a member of the scientific council of the journal Der Diabetologe and of the editorial board of the journal Diabetes, Stoffwechsel und Herz.

Professor Dr. med. N. Marx's main areas of research are the onset and treatment of atherosclerosis and diabetes mellitus (clinical and experimental studies), the attenuation of intracellular signalling in vascular cells, and inflammation of adipose tissue.

Professor N. Marx is listed among the best cardiologists in Germany by «Focus» magazine.
