The Department of Orthopaedics at University Hospital Aachen is a certified centre of orthopaedic expertise and the medical care base for Germany's national and club sports teams. In addition, the department and its head, Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Markus Tingart, are listed among the best German hospitals and doctors in the ranking of the respected magazine Focus.
The Department of Orthopaedics at University Hospital Aachen holds the status of a Second Expert Opinion Centre in the field of joint replacement surgery.
The Department of Orthopaedics at University Hospital Aachen offers the full range of state-of-the-art minimally invasive arthroscopic joint surgery, from primary joint replacement to complex revision surgery involving the exchange of an existing prosthesis. The department's senior physicians have been members of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery for many years. Joint replacement procedures, including the choice of the most suitable implant material, shape and size, are planned individually on the basis of detailed examinations (digital radiography, MRI, CT). The concept for the operation and for the patient's further treatment is developed in interdisciplinary collaboration with the departments of anaesthesiology, pain therapy and radiology and with the department of physiotherapy and early rehabilitation. Thanks to modern advances in anaesthesiology and pain therapy, every patient is offered pain-free rehabilitation, early mobilisation and a rapid return to full weight-bearing on the artificial joint.
The high quality of the implants ensures a long service life, often 20-25 years. All of this makes joint replacement surgery in German hospitals attractive for older people, allowing them to return to a normal, pain-free life even at the age of 80 and beyond.

The doctors of the Department of Orthopaedics at University Hospital Aachen give preference primarily to minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques, which offer a whole range of advantages.
Today, for example, a herniated disc in the cervical spine is operated on using minimally invasive methods, and restorative physiotherapy begins the day after surgery. Gentle, minimally invasive surgical techniques have also been developed and are widely used for other joints of the upper and lower limbs. The department has state-of-the-art equipment for diagnostic imaging and surgery and applies the latest methods of anaesthesia, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and intensive care on site.
