For many years he held the position of senior consultant in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the University Hospital Aachen. Within his orthopaedic specialisation, he led the team responsible for the treatment of joint disorders.

In addition to performing all types of orthopaedic surgery, he was part of a research team that contributed to the development and clinical investigation of a joint-preserving surgical cartilage replacement technique. Today this technique is firmly established in everyday clinical practice.
