Peter Walter

Professor, Doctor of Medicine P. Walter | Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Peter Walter has headed the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Aachen, part of RWTH Aachen University, since 2003. The department became particularly well known among Russian patients thanks to the successful treatment there of Sergei Filin, the former artistic director of the Bolshoi Theatre ballet company, who sustained severe burns to his eyes and face in an attack on him.

Since 2012, Prof. Dr. med. Peter Walter has been listed year after year among the best ophthalmologists in Germany by «Focus» magazine. He is an outstanding specialist in the surgical treatment of the retina and the vitreous body.

Under his leadership, the department is developing the Argus II retinal implant and introducing it into clinical practice — the so-called «bionic eye», a device implanted into the eye to activate retinal cells that are still viable (a retinal implant, an electronic visual prosthesis for the blind). In 2012 it began to be used to treat patients with retinitis pigmentosa.

Prof. Dr. med. P. Walter is one of the authors of the academic textbook «Prof. Dr. Niklas Plange, Prof. Peter Walter: Grundlagen der Augenheilkunde»; he is the author and co-author of numerous research studies and articles in specialist journals, a participant in national and international ophthalmology congresses, and a member of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG).
