West German Heart Centre, Essen

The West German Heart Centre in Essen, together with its Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, is one of the largest specialist clinics in Europe, focusing on high-risk and highly complex cardiac surgery. The West German Heart Centre is part of University Hospital Essen and comprises two departments: the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Department of Cardiology. Doctors from many countries regularly complete fellowships at the clinic, both in research and in clinical projects.

The clinic's four operating theatres are equipped with the latest surgical technology for the full range of modern operations on the heart, blood vessels and thoracic organs, with maximum safety for the patient. The coronary angiography and angioplasty techniques used here considerably widen the treatment options, minimise risks and shorten the patient's stay in hospital. In addition, the clinic has a further operating theatre, the Hybrid Room, for so-called hybrid procedures, which combines the features of an operating theatre and a cardiac catheterisation laboratory.

This gentle approach saves both operating time and time spent in hospital. The clinic performs more than 2500 operations a year, half of them using a mechanical heart-lung support system.

The Department of Cardiology is headed by one of Germany's leading cardiologists, Prof. Dr. med. Raimund Erbel, and the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery by Prof. Dr. med. Heinz Günther Jakob. Year after year both are listed among Germany's best doctors by «Focus» magazine and included in the Leading Medicine Germany list. The two departments have 55 and 50 hospital beds respectively.

One of the Centre's key areas of work is coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) performed without a heart-lung machine (off-pump), which is less traumatic, carries a lower risk of bleeding, and means a shorter hospital stay and faster postoperative recovery.
