Honorary Professor of Medicine I. Meinhold-Heerlein I Hon.-Prof. Dr. med. habil. Ivo Meinhold-Heerlein has been, since 2009, Chief Physician and Medical Director of the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Head of the certified Endometriosis Centre, Head of the expert group for ovarian cancer treatment, Head of the Euroregional Interdisciplinary Cancer Centre and of the Centre for Gynaecological Oncology, and Head of the oncology laboratory at University Hospital Giessen. Professor Meinhold-Heerlein’s main areas of specialisation are: obstetric care in high-risk pregnancies and perinatal medicine, robot-assisted surgery using the Da Vinci® surgical robot, the treatment of endometriosis, minimally invasive and endoscopic oncological surgery including laparoscopic cancer operations of the highest level of complexity, and palliative medicine.

Prof. Meinhold-Heerlein gives masterclasses as the operating surgeon, broadcast live from the operating theatre, at the congresses of the German Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich and masterclasses in laparoscopic surgery for cervical cancer in Cape Town (South Africa), as well as in India and Tanzania.

Professor Meinhold-Heerlein’s research and clinical interests cover current issues and innovations in operative gynaecology and reproductive medicine, such as:

• laparoscopic hysterectomy;
• laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy;
• laparoscopic myomectomy and anti-adhesion techniques in laparoscopy;
• innovations in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence;
• laparoscopy in gynaecological oncology;
• innovations in the surgical treatment of endometriosis;
• innovations in hysteroscopy

as well as minimally invasive techniques for treating pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence in women:

• laparoscopic techniques for the correction of urinary incontinence in women;
• the vaginal approach in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence;
• the robot-assisted surgical approach in the correction of genital prolapse and urinary incontinence in
  women;
• synthetic materials in pelvic surgery.

Professor Ivo Meinhold-Heerlein is a member of the German Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (DGGG) and of the German Cancer Society (DKG), head of the German Cancer Society’s research projects on molecular markers in ovarian carcinoma, a member of the editorial board of Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and the author and co-author of some fifty scientific papers in international specialist journals.

According to the annual ranking published by «Focus» magazine, Professor Ivo Meinhold-Heerlein is listed among the best German specialists in the treatment of ovarian cancer and cervical cancer for 2016 and 2017.

Professor Meinhold-Heerlein is the recipient of eight awards from the German Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (DGGG), the Working Group on Gynaecological Endoscopy (AGE) and the Working Group on Gynaecological Oncology (AGO).
