Professor Dr. med. Nicolai Maass

Professor Dr. med. N. Maass | Prof. Dr. med. Nicolai Maass has been Head of the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel since 2015.

After studying at the University of Ferrara (Italy) and the University of Hamburg-Eppendorf (1985-1992) and clinical training in the USA, South Africa and at the University Hospital of Freiburg, in 1996 Dr Maass was appointed junior resident and research fellow in the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the

University Hospital of Kiel. Dr Maass was the recipient of a research grant at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Harvard Medical School from the German cancer charity Deutsche Krebshilfe e.V. (1995-1996) and of a research grant at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo as a fellow of the Japanese foundation for the promotion of cancer research (1998).

After obtaining his licence to practise as a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, in 2001 Dr Maass became a senior physician in the same department of the University Hospital of Kiel. In 2002 he gained the additional medical qualification "Special Obstetrics / Perinatal Medicine", in 2005 the additional specialisation "Special Operative Gynaecology" and in 2006 "Gynaecological Oncology". In June 2006 he was awarded the title of adjunct professor. In 2005 Dr N. Maass became head of the interdisciplinary tumour board and deputy head of the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. In 2009 Professor Maass took over the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at University Hospital Aachen, becoming one of the founders of the hospital's Euregional Comprehensive Cancer Center Aachen (ECCA) and of the Aachen breast centre and head of the interdisciplinary Continence Centre.

In 2010 he took charge of the Level 1 Perinatal Centre, the Endometriosis Centre and the Euregional association of gynaecologists of the university hospitals of Aachen, Maastricht (the Netherlands) and Ghent (Belgium).

In 2012 Prof. Maass gained the additional qualification of certified specialist in robot-assisted surgery.

In the same year he took over the Euregional board for gynaecological oncology and second expert opinions.

Professor N. Maass is a member of the German Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (DGGG) and was its president in 2006-2008. He is a member of the German Cancer Society (DKG), head of the commission for the certification of breast centres ("Certified Breast Centre") of the European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists (EUSOMA), a member of the European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists (EUSOMA) and of the German Society of Senology (DGS). Since 2000 Prof. Maass has been a member of the expert committee of the cancer charity Deutsche Krebshilfe e.V.; since 2002, a member of the breast cancer study group of the Gynaecological Oncology Working Group (AGO); since 2003, a member of the research commission and of the scientific advisory board on breast cancer prevention of the German Breast Group; since 2004, a founder and member of the study group "Translational Research of the Gynaecological Oncology Working Group"; since 2008, head of the nationwide German online tumour board for breast cancer; and since 2008 also a founder and member of the management board of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein. Since 2011 Prof. Maass has been a member of the S-3 commission drawing up the guideline recommendations for breast cancer treatment, a member of the working group "Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG) in German Gynaecology/Obstetrics" of the German Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (DGGG) and second deputy chairman of the board of the operative medicine association of the German Network for Evidence-based Medicine, Deutsches Netzwerk Evidenzbasierte Medizin e.V. Professor Dr. med. N. Maass is the author and co-author of some two hundred scientific publications in international specialist journals.

According to the annual ranking published by «Focus» magazine, Professor Dr. med. N. Maass is listed among the best German specialists in breast cancer treatment for 2014-2021.
