Professor Dr. med. Tim H. Brümmendorf


Since 2009 Professor Dr. med. Tim H. Brümmendorf has headed Department IV of Haematology, Oncology, Haemostaseology and Stem Cell Transplantation at the University Hospital Aachen of RWTH Aachen University.

After completing his studies at the universities of Heidelberg and Hamburg, Dr. T. H. Brümmendorf defended his doctoral thesis (Dr. med.) with distinction. He completed his residency training at the Department of Haematology, Oncology and Immunology of the University Hospital Tübingen. Awarded a research grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG), Dr. T. H. Brümmendorf spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow under Prof. Lansdorp at the Terry Fox Laboratory (Canada).

On his return to the University Hospital Tübingen, Dr. Brümmendorf continued his residency training. After passing the board examination in internal medicine in 2003 and obtaining the right to teach at medical faculties, in 2005 Dr. T. H. Brümmendorf took up the post of senior consultant at the Department of Haematology and Oncology of the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, where in the same year he passed the national board examination in haematology and medical oncology. In 2006 Dr. Brümmendorf passed the examination of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). He was awarded the title of professor in 2007; in the same year he was appointed lead senior consultant and deputy medical director of the University Cancer Centre Hamburg; in 2009 he became head physician of Department IV of Haematology, Oncology, Haemostaseology and Stem Cell Transplantation at the University Hospital Aachen of RWTH Aachen University. In 2010 Prof. T. H. Brümmendorf took charge of the Euregional Comprehensive Cancer Center Aachen (ECCA).

Professor Dr. med. T. H. Brümmendorf serves as an expert adviser to the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Cancer Society (in the field of leukaemia), the German cancer charity «Deutsche Krebshilfe e.V.»,

the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), the Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund (United Kingdom), the Swiss Cancer League, the Medical Research Council (United Kingdom) and the Anniversary Fund for the support of research and educational projects of the Austrian National Bank (OeNB).
Professor Dr. med. T. H. Brümmendorf has been a member of the German Cancer Society (DKG) since 1993, of the German Society of Internal Medicine since 1995, of the International Society for Experimental Hematology (ISEH) since 1998, of the German Society of Haematology and Oncology since 1999, and of the American Society of Hematology since 2001. Since 2010 Prof. Brümmendorf has been a member of the Working Group for Medical Oncology (AIO) of the German Cancer Society. Prof. Brümmendorf is a board member of the Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH).

The clinical interests of Professor T. H. Brümmendorf include chronic myeloid leukaemia, myeloproliferative neoplasms and aplastic syndromes, in particular aplastic anaemia and paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria. His research interests cover the genetic and epigenetic causes of aplastic syndromes and malignant blood diseases (telomere biology, for example) and their targeted therapy.

Professor Brümmendorf is a consultant to the pharmaceutical companies Ariad, Novartis and Pfizer. He holds a patent for imatinib combination therapy with hypusine inhibitors (Novartis).

Professor Brümmendorf is the author and co-author of more than 230 scientific monographs, articles and studies published in specialist German and international journals.

Since 2013 the name of Professor T. H. Brümmendorf has been included every year in the list of the best German specialists in the treatment of malignant blood diseases compiled by the respected magazine «FOCUS».

World leadership in cancer treatment

In recent decades, global changes in the way we live and the rise in overall life expectancy have meant that cancer accounts for a growing share of disease. Today, after cardiovascular disease, these conditions are already among the most common causes of death. Cancer profoundly changes the life of the patient and those close to them. But in countries with advanced medicine a diagnosis of «cancer» is in most cases not a death sentence. Doctors today have at their disposal a wide range of tools for the prevention, control and treatment of cancer. Cancer treatment at the Department of Haematology, Oncology, Haemostaseology and Stem Cell Transplantation of the University Hospital Aachen is recognised as one of the most successful in the West. Survival rates for the various types of cancer 5 years after diagnosis and the start of treatment are the highest in the world.
In Germany, cancer therapy is provided both in specialised hospitals and departments and in comprehensive cancer centres. Treatment of every cancer patient in Germany always means carefully considered, appropriate therapy (as gentle as possible) matched to how aggressive the tumour is; it means taking the person's age and psychological make-up into account; it means psychological support for the patient and those close to them; and it means interdisciplinary cooperation between medical oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, specialists in nuclear medicine and radiotherapy, and psycho-oncologists.

The course of the disease and each patient's treatment are discussed regularly at interdisciplinary tumour boards. By combining systemic (chemotherapy) and local (radiofrequency ablation, chemoembolisation) forms of therapy, doctors are able either to halt the spread of cancer cells or to deliver comprehensive palliative treatment. The diagnostic and treatment standards followed by the Department of Haematology, Oncology, Haemostaseology and Stem Cell Transplantation of the University Hospital Aachen are set in line with the latest discoveries of medical science and are updated regularly. For this reason the department takes an active part in clinical trials of modern cancer treatment methods.
