Professor Dr. med. U. Kontny | Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Udo Kontny — Head of the Section of Paediatric Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at University Hospital Aachen — one of the best paediatric haematologist-oncologists in Germany.

Biography

After completing his studies at the medical faculties of the universities of Tübingen (Germany) and Montpellier (France) and at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester (Massachusetts, USA), and clinical training at Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA) and the University of Brest (France), Dr. Kontny worked at University Hospital Mainz.

In 1990 he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. From 1994 to 1998, having received a research grant in the field of paediatric haematology and oncology, Dr. Kontny worked at the National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, USA) on the study "Development of new treatment methods for patients with sarcoma and for HIV infections in cancer patients", as well as on the topic "Cellular responses to DNA damage".

From 1998 Dr. Kontny held the position of research fellow in the paediatric department of University Hospital Freiburg, where he supervised the following areas: haematology and oncology, stem cell transplantation, and the treatment of patients with sarcoma and with infections during immunosuppressive therapy.

In 2001 he became senior registrar and subsequently deputy head physician of the department of paediatric haematology and oncology at the same hospital.

In 2006 Udo Kontny was awarded the title of adjunct professor at University Hospital Freiburg.

At the beginning of 2014 Prof. Kontny took over as head of the Section of Paediatric Haematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation in the paediatric department of University Hospital Aachen.

Professional achievements

Prof. Dr. med. Kontny is the holder of a number of prestigious awards and grants. In 1986-1987, for instance, he held a research grant to study at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester on the topics "Infectious and immunological research into dengue fever infections" and "The mechanism by which apoptosis is triggered via the Fas ligand (FasL) in Ewing sarcoma". In 2000 he received the Nöllenburg Prize of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) for outstanding achievements in the treatment of bone tumours. In 2003 Prof. Dr. med. Kontny was awarded the Lina Margarete Siebert Prize of the Mainz Foundation for the Support of Research in Paediatric Oncology for his work "Study of the mechanism of apoptosis through research into specific killer ligand receptors in Ewing sarcoma". In 2007 Professor Kontny received the Fasanelli Award of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) for his outstanding contribution to research into Ewing sarcoma.

Prof. U. Kontny is a member of a number of professional societies, commissions and foundations, including the German Cancer Society (DKG), the German Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (DGPI), the German Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ) and the German Haemophilia Society (DHG e.V.). One of his honorary positions is that of treasurer of the Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH).

Professor Kontny is the author and co-author of more than 50 scientific monographs, articles and studies published in specialist German and international journals.

Paediatric Haematology and Oncology in Aachen

Children and adolescents are treated in accordance with the requirements and guidelines of the German Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH) and in line with the latest advances in medical science.

The section's staff treat benign and malignant tumours, blood clotting disorders and developmental abnormalities of the blood and lymphatic vessels in children and adolescents. A new clinical area of specialisation for the section is allogeneic stem cell transplantation in children and adolescents with congenital and severe malignant bone marrow diseases. Professor Kontny's research focuses on malignant soft tissue and bone tumours as well as tumours of the lymph nodes. Its aim is to develop new, more effective treatments with fewer side effects.

The Section of Paediatric Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at University Hospital Aachen maintains the registry of the German Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH) for the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and conducts preclinical studies of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC-91, NPC-2003, NPC-2016), research into the influence of Epstein-Barr virus variants in the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and research into the role of innate immunity in the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal cancer. The main focus is on translational research into malignant soft tissue and bone tumours. The aim of this research is to develop new, more effective treatments with fewer side effects by studying the characteristics of tumour cells. The hospital is also the site of Prof. Mertens' multicentre study on the diagnosis and treatment of nasopharyngeal cancer. Over the past few years this study has significantly improved treatment outcomes and tolerability.

The Section of Paediatric Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at University Hospital Aachen specialises in the treatment of leukaemia, brain tumours, bone tumours and embryonal tumours in children and adolescents.

The hospital is part of an interdisciplinary stem cell transplantation programme for the treatment of malignant tumours such as leukaemia, lymphoid tissue hyperplasia and solid tumours, as well as benign haematological diseases such as immunodeficiencies and inborn metabolic disorders. The hospital's specialists have gained extensive experience in the use of cell transplantation in the treatment of rare immunodeficiencies and haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. In addition, the Section of Paediatric Oncology specialises in haploidentical haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The stem cell transplantation unit is one of the most respected institutions in Europe.

The Section of Paediatric Oncology at University Hospital Aachen admits more than 150 cancer patients a year — children and adolescents with primary carcinomas. The Department of Paediatric Oncology at University Hospital Aachen serves as the European coordinating centre for the treatment of bone tumours (Ewing sarcoma, osteogenic sarcoma). In addition, University Hospital Aachen leads international research in the field of the treatment of germ cell tumours. Treatment combines surgery, chemotherapy and high-precision radiotherapy, significantly improving patients' chances of a successful cure. To date, the bone marrow transplantation unit at the hospital has carried out bone marrow transplants in almost 300 children and adolescents, primarily with malignant diseases of the haematopoietic system (leukaemias, for example). The Section of Paediatric Haematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation is a leader in bone marrow transplantation in Germany. The section specialises in providing high-tech medical care to patients diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, acute myeloblastic leukaemia, chronic leukaemias, myelodysplastic syndromes, non-Hodgkin lymphomas, Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, aplastic anaemia and solid tumours, which includes all forms of cytostatic, targeted and immunosuppressive therapy and various types of bone marrow transplantation. The hospital specialises in treating hereditary and congenital diseases by means of bone marrow transplantation.
