Professor Dr. med. Frank Tacke

Professor of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Dr. med. Frank Tacke | Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Frank Tacke has headed the Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Charité University Hospital in Berlin since April 2019. 

Before that he was a senior consultant in Medical Department III (Gastroenterology, Metabolic Diseases and Intensive Care Medicine) at the University Hospital of Aachen, part of RWTH Aachen University.

Professor Tacke worked at the University Hospital of Aachen from 2006. He studied medicine at Hannover Medical School and at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas (USA). After graduating he began working on novel genetic treatment strategies at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas (1998-1999). In 2004-2006 he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, working on “monocytes and macrophages and the biology of dendritic cells”. Since 2006 he has been a clinician and head of a research laboratory at the University Hospital of Aachen, Germany.

Dr. F. Tacke holds specialist qualifications in internal medicine, gastroenterology and intensive care medicine.

In 2012 Frank Tacke received a professorship and a lectureship at RWTH Aachen University. In 2014, at the international congress of hepatologists in London, Professor F. Tacke was unanimously elected chairman of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). His research interests in clinical and experimental hepatology include the regulation of inflammatory responses in the liver and new imaging techniques for analysing immune cell populations in the injured liver. Professor Tacke has taken part in a number of clinical trials aimed at improving the treatment of acute liver failure, chronic hepatitis B and C, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. He is the author and co-author of more than 180 scientific papers and studies in specialist German and international journals.

Professor F. Tacke was head of the “Gastroenterological Intensive Care Medicine” working group of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) in 2015-2017; he is a member of the academic council of the liver patients' self-help association (LSH e.V.), a member of the working group on non-alcoholic steatohepatitis of the German Society of Internal Medicine (DGIM), a member of the German Society of Medical Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DGIIN), a member of the Haemochromatosis Research Association (HVD), and a member of the editorial board of the publications on digestive and metabolic diseases issued by the German Society of Internal Medicine (DGIM).
